Our students, bilingual education and a healthy, performance-based approach are central to teaching and learning at SIS. Our curriculum combines the Brazilian curriculum with elements of the IB Primary Years Programme.
Primary School
At our primary school, students acquire high-level language skills in both English and Portuguese, which is of paramount importance at this level. We promote awareness and respect for other cultures as the basis for an international education. We aim to empower students and give them a voice in their learning process.
SIS Brasília
Our primary school combines the Brazilian Curriculum with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB), as well as with curricula developed by SIS in key areas to enrich learning with relevant and meaningful skills and, at the same time, promote bilingualism. Each of our primary school classes are accompanied by two teachers that take turns at different times: one is an English-speaking teacher and the other speaks Portuguese.
Some subjects are taught in both languages, such as mathematics, science, history/society and geography, and others are alternately taught each year in English or Portuguese, such as physical education and arts. This alternation helps the students to acquire knowledge in both languages. In addition, some other subjects are always covered in one of the two languages.
From Year 4 onwards, students learn German as a foreign language. In Year 5, they participate in the PYP culmination project, the Exhibition, in which they select a topic of global relevance to investigate and propose solutions in a collaborative way.
We use different teaching and learning methods to encourage our students to identify and improve their own learning strategies. We focus on developing problem-solving, questioning and research skills based on real-life situations, enabling students to gain new knowledge and to help them deepen their understanding of what they have learned.
The primary students participate in various activities throughout the year, such as: Creative Saturday, in which parents are invited to participate in activities with their child, and Cultural Exhibition, in which, on the last day of the first semester, students present the work done throughout the semester to the parents, including drama performances and other various activities.
Swiss International School
Our bilingual preschool combines the Brazilian curriculum with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization. The PYP is for children from preschool to Year 5. The PYP principles are aligned with the SIS Brasília pedagogical proposal, such as using inquiry-based learning. In Year 5, students participate in the PYP culmination project, the Exhibition, in which they select a topic of global relevance to investigate and propose solutions in a collaborative way.
