Primary School

Our students, bilingual education and a healthy performance-based approach are central at SIS.

At our bilingual Primary School, teaching is based on a curriculum that combines the national Brazilian curriculum and the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization. By attending our Primary School, children are ideally prepared for the transition into our Secondary School.

Bilingual Instruction

Each of our primary school classes has two teachers: one is a Portuguese-speaking teacher and the other speaks the second language. The development of language skills in Portuguese and English, German or French, is of paramount importance at this level. Other subjects, such as mathematics, might also be taught in a language other than Portuguese. Additionally, a third language is taught as a foreign language.

Curriculum

SIS has developed a unique curriculum for children in this age group. It comprises six areas of learning, whose educational content is based on the regulations and standards of the national curriculum, and supplemented by the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization.

Our primary curriculum consists of the following seven areas:

  • language (communication, reading and writing)
  • mathematics
  • sciences
  • social studies
  • arts
  • physical education
  • personal and social education
